Summary / Abstract:

EN"Gimtasai kraštas" (The Native Land) magazine is one of the first publications, which started from so far successfully carried out publishing activities of “Aušra” Museum. Šiauliai "Aušra" Museum was founded in 1923. In 1928, it came under the aegis of Šiauliai Local Lore Society, founded a year ago. Those two institutions together did a lot in the field of cultural heritage research and protection. In 1930, on initiative of Peliksas Bugailiškis (1883–1965), the founder of "Aušra" Museum and Šiauliai Regional Society, lawyer and ethnographer, was published "Šiauliai metraštis" (Šiauliai annals) (periodic information, statistics and lore books). In 1930–1938, five books of it were published. They recorded facts and statistics about Šiauliai and its region’s social, economic, political, educational and cultural development. "Gimtasai kraštas" published material from all ethnographic regions of the country, mainly on the following subjects: ethnography, museology, archeology, ethnology, folklore, language and nature. The magazine encouraged many Lithuanian intellectuals to join the research of the country and was very useful to the self-taught ethnologists and ethnographers. The published material and research today are considered to be as priceless, timeless information the value of which is constantly increasing.
