ENMulti-harness fabric is an exceptional phenomenon in Belarus folk art. For Belarus folk weaving, a characteristic type of fabric is the linen rucznik with its complicated geometric ornament. One can come across fabrics woven on a loom with four, eight, ten and even twenty four harnesses. The Belarusian textiles are similar in appearance to those in Lithuania and Poland. Patterned multi-harness fabrics from Belarus are called dymka, dymkawy rucznik, which means thin and shimmering. In the Grodno region some of these fabrics are known as kapy wileńskie. In the eastern regions of the country, near the Russian border, we come across the name lićwiaki, clearly referring to the historic area of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Archival materials and dialectal lexis show that the technique of multi-harness weaving spread through the mutual influence of peasant culture and handicraft and workshop weavers.
