ENWhen characterizing the historical memory of people inhabiting the investigated area of the Belarusian-Polish borderland (around Sopoćkie/Сапоцкiн, Odelsk/Адэльск, Dubicze Cerkiewne), we can only talk about a certain model, basing on the most characteristic fragments. The periodization of events noted in the memory of inhabitants from the investigated area shows both a number of differences and some similarities. An important common element for all respondents was the time of the World War II, though dated differently depending on where they were at the time. Other important elements of periodization of events noted in historical memory are changes in state borders, names of leading politicians. It is a pragmatic memory concentrated on things that were vitally significant from the individual perspective. Preserving memories of events and people enables them to survive in the historical sense. Nevertheless, we cannot omit the role of museums, chambers of memory, articles or historical reportage and their influence on people’s historical memory and awareness.
