Alternative Title:
Ethnographic studies in the northeast Polish-Lithuanian borderland, from the middle of the 20th century
Summary / Abstract:

ENThe Polish-Lithuanian borderland in the sense of the strip of land lying along the border was studied on many occasions as regards its language, history and ethnography. Most often the object of investigations was the people of Lithuanian nationality. Professor Marian Pokropek paid special attention to Lithuanian folk culture in his studies, but most of the researchers were Lithuanian. The collected material served as a basis for numerous publications, as well as articles in the press, both specialized and local. In the 1980s Lithuanian wedding customs and ceremonies, with traditions going back to the end of the 19th century, were recorded. The research constituted the basis for an MA thesis and an extensive article in “Polska Sztuka Ludowa” in 1983. Juozas Vaina, founder of the ethnographic museum in Puńsk, was especially interested in the spiritual culture, documenting many tales, songs, legends and anecdotes. In 1989, comprehensive field research was carried out by the Institute of History of Vilnius University. In spite of so much research having been done in the Polish-Lithuanian borderland, some topics have not yet been addressed, while others need further in-depth studies and analyses.
