ENThe Suwałki Region lies in the north east of Poland, in the Polish-Lithuanian-Belarusian borderland. This border area is rich in texts of culture which have been researched and analyzed by the Ethnographic Section of the District Museum since 1964. The first exhibits found their way into the collection thanks to the outstanding regionalist Antoni Patia. Regular fieldwork, abounding in numerous acquisitions, was begun by Marianna Halicka in 1964. Her work and collection were devoted to traditional Lithuanian dress and ritual art. An important stage in the ethnographic activities of the Suwałki museum was cooperation with Professor Marian Pokropek and many journeys took place together for the purpose of recording the traditional architecture of the Suwałki region. Since 2006, the Ethnographic Section is directed by Krzysztof Snarski who is carrying out multi-theme studies concerning the Old Believers minority living in the Suwałki region. The results of research are published in specialist publications. The work of the Suwałki museum is devoted not only to documentation but also to exhibiting and it organizes numerous temporary exhibitions.
