EN[...] The book contains quite many facts and data from the history of the Lithuanian post and the issuing and use of postage stamps. For the first time ever, the book contains the lists of the first Lithuanian post offices and postmasters, as well as the lists of Soviet post offices that operated in Lithuania in 1919. It describes the activities of the Lithuanian post and the short-lived Soviet post in Vilnius from 1919 to 1920, and presents a concise analysis of the conditions of delivering dispatches. The book provides a comprehensive description of the production process and functioning of postage stamps from the announcement of a drawing competition to putting them into circulation and their use to pay for postal services. All the designers who participated in the competitions for postage stamps are listed, their competition works are presented, and the stamp-printing process starting from the choice of colours, size settings and proof prints, and ending with actual stamps is shown along with the indication of their basic differences. [...] The book names designers of postage stamps that were unknown so far, and the dates of putting Into circulation some postage stamps, as well as specifies their validity dates and print runs. The rates of postal charges in 1919-1940 and the limits of their validity are presented, and the practice of their application is described. [...] The book is the first attempt to look at the post as a significant area of our cultural history, and as an institution which performed an important mission - efficient organisation of society's communication by letters - in the period of existence of the independent state of Lithuania.
