ENThe article analyses the beginning and development of the monetary union in Europe, and presents the most common features of the international monetary system, which existed in the second half of the twentieth century. The main creation stages of monetary union in Europe, the development of euro area and its institutional structure of government are discussed in the article. The article deals also the means of monetary policy, applied in the activity of European Central Bank and their impact on the macroeconomic processes.
