ENIn the history of Lithuanian archaeology, the Vilnius Temporary Archaeological Commission, which was established by the efforts of Count Eustachy Tyszkiewicz in 1855 and operated until 1865, is usually regarded as a society exploring the past, or a branch of the Vilnius Museum of Antiquities. The archaeological activity of the commission is more related with the word "archaeology" found in its title rather than its actual works. In the middle of the 19th century archaeology was understood very broadly, as the collecting and research of various antiquities in general. The Vilnius Temporary Archaeological Commission was also guided by this approach. Pure archaeology - excavated finds testifying to human activity, apart from the finds, which were transferred to the Vilnius Museum of Antiquities - constituted only a small part of the activity of this commission. It is best revealed by the minutes of the sessions of the Vilnius Temporary Archaeological Commission. 38 sessions took place between 1856 and 1858, but archaeological issues were discussed in five of them, and only part of the time. In fact, there was only one person in the commission who took interest in archaeological issues - Adam Honory Kirkor (1818-1886).He took care of the museum's archaeological collections, led excavations and published works of archaeological nature. However, his activity had a wider scope than archaeology. The archaeological activity of the other members of the commission - the brothers Tyszkiewicz and Ludwik Kondratowicz, alias Władysław Syrokomla (1823-1862) - was rather episodic. Basically, the Vilnius Temporary Archaeological Commission should be assessed as a scientific society, which it aimed to become, but its archaeological activity should not be overestimated.
