ENThe article deals with medieval miniatures of the 13th-16th c. with the image of Tatars, which are the important visual source for the history of relations of European states with the Golden Horde. Analysis of the miniatures content allows us to trace the evolution of the perception of Tatars: from the original demonizacion as homines monstruoisi et inhumani prior to their inclusion into the view of the medieval European world. Special attention is paid to the cycle of miniatures of the Litsevoy chronicle dedicated to the history of relations between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Tatars. The main stages of the political history of GDL and the Golden Horde, including such iconic events as the Battle of Blue Waters in 1362 and on the Vorskla River in 1399 are reflected in the miniatures. The appeal to the medieval miniatures let as to sec (to see in the truest sense of the word) events as they were seen by the people of the Middle Ages.
