ENThe phenomenon of a priest as a poet is an important mark of classical Lithuanian literature. During the years of the Soviet occupation the priesthood of classical Lithuanian writers (Antanas Baranauskas, Jonas Mačiulis-Maironis, Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas and others) confused critics and, therefore, it made them seek some biographical "justifications" of the religious vocation. Not once was the poetry by Maironis interpreted as deformed by his biographical priesthood as a self-imposed censorship. This paper seeks to investigate the poetic and priestly consciousness present in the lyrical texts by Maironis. The paper follows the methodological principle that maintains the distinction between the biographical and the implied author. The distinction provides the grounds to see the difference between those poems by Maironis that show no textual signs of the priestly consciousness of the poetic speaker (biographical criteria of the priesthood are not adequate for the interpretation of such poems) and those poems that interpret the religious vocation. The research addresses the problem of the character of the priestly existence and the relationship between poetic and religious vocations seen in these latter poems.
