Summary / Abstract:

ENYotvingia was located south west from the upper Nemunas. Today this area belongs mostly to Poland, Lithuania and the Russian Federation. Kaliningrad Oblast and Masuria were under German administration for a long time, thus it is very difficult to reconstruct the Yotvingian place names of these territories. The Yotvingian place names were reconstructed in Poland in Regained Territories after the Second World War (following the rules of the Polish language). All the Yotvingian place names have been changed in Kaliningrad Oblast. The author of the article analyses the origin of the lake names in the territories of former Yotvingia (now in Poland). He starts with the names of Masurian Lakes and then follows the analysis of the lake names from the Polish-Lithuanian border.
