ENSoutheastern Lithuania, the borderline areas of Belarus are distinguished for a variety of languages. In this territory interactions of the whole areas and minor “islands" of Lithuanian, Belarus or Polish dialects and their literary versions are observed. The area under investigation has direct contacts with the territory in which, through history, the most intensive and broad contacts of Slavic and Baltic cthnohnguistic and cultural complexes evolved The linguistic contacts and interactions and the sociological aspect of the contacts have been of considerable interest for Lithuanian, Belarusian, Polish, Russian linguists. In the survey the major works in lexicology are discussed: Baltic and Lithuanian loans in Slavic languages and the areas of their prevalence; Lithuaman words in the historical lexicon of the Belarusian language; peripheral Polish dialects and their variants and the dialect problems of Lithuanian Poles and factors responsible for its formation; features distinguishing the language of the Lithuanian Poles from Polish literary language. Attention is drawn to the sociological aspect of language contacts, since contemporary linguistic research does not, as a rule, ignore social factors, which usually determine linguistic development.
