Summary / Abstract:

ENA large group of Lithuanians lived in the district of Łomża at the beginning of the 20th century. They were priests, teachers, especially from elementary schools, officials and doctors. There was Mykolas Krupavičius, who after graduating from Teachers’ Seminary in Veiveriai, started to work in Pęchratka. The Lithuanian club was founded in Piątnica, where Vincentas Aleksandravičius worked as a parish priest. Vincentas Aleksandravičius graduated the Seinai seminary, but he was banned to work the diocese of Seinai by the Tsarist authorities. In December of 1905 the Lithuanians sent the request to the Governor to Łomża to register the Association “Pagalba”. The refusal was issued in May of 1906. However, the Lithuanians sent the new request, signed by 23 people, in June the same year. The association was allowed to register and started its legal activity. The association supported its members, who for various reasons fond themselves away from their homeland. “Pagalba” operated until 1912 and had more than 50 members.
