Summary / Abstract:

ENThe World War II was the horror for the citizens of the Second Polish Republic. The Suvalkai region was incorporated in III Reich and Germans started the unification of the territory. In 1941 III Reich and the Soviet Union signed the pact on the strength of which most of the indigenous residents (Lithuanians) of the Suvalkai region were evicted. The end of the war did not improve the situation of Lithuanians. New authorities had a concept of Poland free from national minorities, therefore, they put pressure on Lithuanians to leave the country. Those Lithuanians who were evicted in 1941 and decided to come back had a lot of difficulties getting the citizenship and ability to settle. Despite the campaigns organized by district, voyvodeship and central authorities the eviction of Lithuanians from the Suvalkai region did not come up their expectations. Lithuanians were still living in the Suvalkai County. The issue of the citizenship was formalized by the act of the Presidium of Białystok Voyvodeship National Council sent to Berznykas District National Council in 1953. The act recommended giving the Polish citizenship for Lithuanians and Russians who resigned from the Polish citizenship and got the Lithuanian citizenship during the war.
