Summary / Abstract:

ENBolesław IV the Curly had an active policy towards Prussia, however it suffered a crushing defeat in 1166 and ended with the death of Henry of Sandomir. Some years later, the son of Bolesław III Wry mouth - Casimir the Just came back to the same policy. The author of the article presents Casimir the Just and his achievements. He starts with the discussion of historical sources and comes to the conclusion that they are very skimpy. The fights with Prussians were presented by Wincenty Kadłubek in ‘Chronicles of the Kings and Princes of Poland’. The military incursions into Prussia took place in 1191- 1193. The exact reasons of the invasions are not known, however it may have been retaliation for the death of Henry of Sandomir. In the beginning Casimir the Just directed his troops against Pollexiani (the western tribe of Yotvingians) who inhabited the territories near the river Lek (Elk). He wanted to get Prince of Dorohychyn under control and to take revenge for plundering raids into Poland. According to Wincenty Kadłubek, it was also a mission trip to propagate, the cult of St. Wojciech. Pollexiani tried to avoid open fights with the troops of Casimir the Just and therefore hid in the forests. Discouraged by their losses, they finally decided to surrender to Casimir the Just and to make the agreement. Nevertheless, in 1216 Prussians started military incursions into Poland again.
