Summary / Abstract:

ENBraslaw regional assemblies of the 1750s and early 1760s were held in the atmosphere of growing antagonism among various magnate factions that emerged in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In the years 1756–1758 the parties from Ciechanowiec and Strutyń had greatest influence. With time, the political conflicts spread to local followers. As a consequence, seven out of the total number of sixteen Braslaw parliaments were broken off. The analysis of the events shows that a number of sejmiks, including the 1756 and the 1755 assemblies, were dissolved as a result of fight between the Radziwiłł and the Familia factions. Other reasons included disagreements between royal supporters and those of numerous noblemen groups, such as Sapieha, Ogiński, Pociej, and Hylzen. At the four effective electoral sejmiks, four Radziwiłł followers were elected, and at that time they made half of all elected Braslaw representatives. Consequently, owing to strong local support from Ciechanowiecki and Wawrzecki families, and from Józef Strutyński in 1754, Radziwiłł electors dominated more than half of all regional parliaments.
