ENThe stages during the first centuries (9th-...) comprise the founding of the Russian state (the 1150th anniversary having been marked in 2012 which includes: 1) in 862, judging from the chronicles, the Slavic and Finnish tribes invited the noble Duke Rurik and his brothers to Ladoga (now Staraya Ladoga, Leningrad Oblast). It was in Ladoga, an important port on the upper Volkhov, that a plan to found a joint Slavic and Finnish state was created. 2) After two or three years Rurik moved to so-called Holmgard, now Rurik hillfort near Viliky Novgorod. 3) The states founding was continued by Duke Oleg (the Seer, the Wise), who in 882 proclaimed Kiev the 'Mother of Rus' cities' or in other words the capital of all the Rus. Thus within 20 years a common Eastern Slav state, Kievan Rus', was created from many tribes. The Rurikid dynasty and the commonality of culture, language, customs, religion, crafts, and commerce became the foundation of this state's unity. In respect to size, internal, international, and transcontinental ties, and centralised government, the Kievan Rus' did not have any equal in Central and Western Europe during the 9th-20th centuries. After its founding, the young state ceaselessly developed and now we are its descendants.
