Summary / Abstract:

ENForeign direct investment is generally perceived as a source of benefits for the countries which receive it. FDI is expected to prompt countries to compete with one another in terms of creating favourable conditions for long-term investments, i.e. a favourable investment climate. However, some of the undertaken actions may, instead of attracting foreign capital, discourage investment or even lead to the withdrawal of previously invested resources. The primary objective of this study is to identify a set of factors influencing the investment climate in Lithuania which promotes long-term direct investment inflows. An additional aim is to apply the identified factors to the case of the largest Polish investment in Lithuania. The analysis showed that Lithuania is a relatively attractive market for direct investment, as a result of its favourable location, skilled workforce, low labour costs, and high development potential. In contrast, the greatest difficulties for business are posed by: inefficient public administration, bureaucracy, labour market, and tax regulations.
