Summary / Abstract:

ENThe “Santaka” Museum of Tauragė was founded in 1990 09 01. In the beginning, the exposition was made up of rather disintegrated ethnographic and historic exhibits collected in various school museums. At present, the Ethnographic Division comprises of 2100 exhibits. The museum displays 467 folk art items, the biggest part of which was donated. The most generous benefactors of the Museum are Kazimieras Paulauskas from Tauragė (wooden carvings), Ona Paulauskienė from Batakiai (wooden carvings) and Aldona Rimkienė from Tauragė (cloths). Aldona Rimkienė weaves tablecloths, bedspreads, table-napkins, national costumes and curtains, as well as very original pictures of the Saints and other thematic compositions. The artist has presented 31 works to the “Santaka” Museum. Kazimieras Paulauskas, another folk artist, used to carve literary personages and so called Rūpintojėliai - the wooden statuettes of Christ. He created original statuettes and silhouettes of musicians. Also Kazimieras carved crosses and special roadside poles with a statuette of a saint for various events or to commemorate the places of suffering. The artist donated the collection of 80 priceless carvings to the museum. The sculptures created by Ona Paulaskienė adorn the roadside poles with a statuette of a saint in multiple places around Batakiai. On 16th of April, 1999, on her 50,h anniversary the author’s exhibition of 108 wooden carvings was held in the museum. After the exhibition all the works remained at the museum. Later, the exhibition catalogue was issued.
