ENIn the period of 2000-2010 there have been significant changes in Lithuania's higher education system. The first change was to create of a new type of higher education schools, which started operating in the academic year 2000-2001. Subsequent changes in Lithuania's higher education system were related to the still ongoing reform of the system of science and studies. The main prerequisites for the reform were problems in Lithuania's higher education system, which had been accumulating for years: low quality of studies and the ensuing devaluation of academic degrees, an inadequate network of higher education institutions and their insufficient autonomy, an irrational system of funding and many other issues. During the reform, a number of radical changes were made, the most important of which was the implementation of "a student's basket". It is currently difficult to impartially assess the effectiveness of the ongoing reform of the system of science and studies, since the ultimate benefits and losses caused by the reform will only be seen in the long term.
