ENThe nineteenth century activities of the secular and religious Lithuanian intelligentsia in connection with the Lithuanian language, Lithuanian writing, and historiography were derived from the causes of the ethnocultural movement of patriotic Lithuanians, which movement also used the Lithuanian language to express itself. The article proposes a new view of the Lithuanian nature in Catholicism and the upsurge of religious life in the Samogitian Diocese in the mid-nineteenth century as an outgrowth of the general renewal process of the Catholic Church of Western Europe. After the Napoleonic years and the Congress of Vienna, an increase in the activity of the Catholic religious life, also called the renewal of the Catholic Church, began to manifest itself in Western Europe. The article states the goals of the Lithuanian activities, spurred by the needs of the renewal of the Catholic Church in Lithuania, the areas of its effect, and the scale differ from the corresponding parameters of the Lithuanian activities of the Lithuanian ethnocultural movement so that in investigating the Lithuanian nature, these Lithuanian activities should be distinguished. A separate analysis of the Lithuanian nature in Catholicism as an outgrowth of the process of the renewal of the Church allows the different initiatives of the clergy, in connection with the use of the Lithuanian language, to be related to one another, the common purpose to be stated, and the very phenomenon of the Lithuanian nature in the Lithuanian society of noble culture to be better understood.
