LTDvidešimtojo amžiaus lietuvių ir lenkų istorikai dažnai labai skirtingai vertino lūžinius Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės (LDK) įvykius. Tarp jų skirtingai buvo interpretuojamas ir Liublino unijos (1569 m.) faktas bei jo išdavos lietuvių visuomenei ir valstybei. Iš lenkiškos perspektyvos šis įvykis buvo tradiciškai pozityvus. Lietuvių istorinėje atmintyje bei istoriografijoje šis faktas buvo siejamas su prievarta, grėsme LDK suverenumui ir teritoriniam integralumui. Toks esminis fakto skirtingas vertinimas iki šiol apsunkina dialogą tarp visuomenių netgi, ir tarp mokslininkų. Kita vertus, lenkų ir lietuvių, istorikų dialogas paskutinius dvidešimt penkerius metus pagyvėjo ir tai turėjo pozityvios įtakos plėtojant Lietuvos vaidmens ATR tyrinėjimus. Pasiūlyta keletą labai įdomių koncepcijų (tarp jų ir „Daugelio Tautų Respublika”), parengta eilė šaltinių leidinių bei monografijų (tarp jų: A. S. Kamiński‘o, A. Rachub‘os, J. Kiaupienės, Z. Kiaupos, H. Lulewic'iaus), sukurtos įvairios diskusinės aplinkos (konferencijos ir parodos organizuotos Vidurio – Rytų Europos Instituto Liubline, Lietuvos Valdovų rūmų Vilniuje, Lenkijos Mokslų Akademijos Krokuvoje, Lietuvos istorijos instituto Vilniuje). Plėtojant šią pozityvią veiklą minėtu laikotarpiu pažymėtinas, ypač, svarbus Vidurio – Rytų Europos Instituto Liubline ir asmeniškai Profesoriaus Jerzy Kłoczowsk’io indėlis.

ENIn the 20th-century Polish and Lithuanian historians often disagreed in their assessment of the important events in the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Among other issues, differing interpretations concerned the Union of Lublin (1569) and its consequences for the Lithuanian state and society. From the Polish perspec- tive the assessment of this event was traditionally positive, while the Lithuanian historical memory and historiography saw it as an overt act of violence against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. These fun- damentally contradictory approaches still hinder dialogue in various areas of social life, including researcher. In the last 25-years, the dialogue between the Lithuanian and Polish historians has been renewed, which has greatly contributed to the progress of research on the place of Lithuania in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In result, a number of interesting concepts have been proposed (such as “The Republic of Many Nations” as a symbolic name for the multi-ethnic society of the Republic), many sources and monographs have been published (by A. S. Kamiński, A. Rachuba, J. Kiaupien˙e, Z. Kiaupa, H. Lulewicz, among others), and numerous spaces for exchange of views and ideas have been created (such as conferences and exhibitions organized by the Institute of East-Central Europe in Lublin, the National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in Vilnius, the Polish Academy of Sciences in Cracow and the Lithuanian Institute of History in Vilnius). For a quarter of a century historians grouped around the Institute of East-Central Europe in Lublin and professor Jerzy Kłoczowski have played a very special role in this positive trend.
