ENThis paper reviews the early (14th–17th century) stage of the development of the narrative of the baptism of Samogitia. Comparing the texts of Jan Długosz, the Lithuanian chronicle, of Jan Lasicki, Maciej Stryjkowski and Albertas Vijūkas-Kojalavičius, it becomes clear that not only the change in ethnic and political values ("Lithuanization", the strengthening of the role of Vytautas), but also common civilization shifts – the value of the individual and his decision and elements of written culture are recognized ever more. A careful reading of the story lets one understand the working method of the old ("precritical") historians and the boundaries of the historicity of the constructed narrative.
