ENThe article offers an overview of the so-called Saussure-Fortunatov's law. Introducing the term of "protraction" (shift of the accent from non acute syllable to the following acute one, for example: rank + -a >*ranka >*ranka >rankä), the author shows the application of the law in the nominal flexion paradigms, including the dual number and the peculiar locative forms. While doing this, he also argues that there are cases in which the law in question seems to be bypassed, namely in the -o and -e stem Dative plural, the -o and -a stem Locative plural, the -o and -e stem Dative dual and some secondary forms of the Locative. It is also noticed that all these exceptions to the traditional Saussure-Fortunatov's law formulation occurs when the acute syllable, which causes the protraction, is not the final syllable of the word. Therefore this fact might be taken into account, describing the shift of the accent in Lithuanian declensional system.
