Summary / Abstract:

ENPriešaušrio vieškeliai (The Highways of Before Dawn) by Radzevičius encompasses rural life after World War II in Lithuania as one of the structural parts comprising especially wide panoramic view of the novel. The elements of the mythological consciousness that claimed an important place in the worldview of the Lithuanian rural community, which suffered the destructions and regressions during World War II, are quite vividly reflected in the representation of the rural life. The first part the novel is analyzed with the purpose of description of elements of the archaic culture and giving the evidence for assuming them as relics of the former myths. Scenes with the purposeful enactment of rituals in the novel written at the end of the 1980s are surprising, but they appear in the way typical for the method of realistic representation. However, the author uses some relics of myths and mythological consciousness in order to unite or reinvent the mundane and sacred spheres. In the context of psychoanalytic literary criticism, it is possible to see that the deepest layers of the collective unconscious of the specific community are revealed in the novel.
