ENArticle deals with the creation of Romanas Švoinickis (1845 -1915) not well-known artist of the second half of the 19th - beginning of the 20th c.c. His ties with nobiliary Lithuanian and Polish culture. The author states briefly his biographical facts, which had an influence on artist’s philosophy of life and forming the principles of artistic creation - childhood in estate of Rodai (Panevėžys district), studies at Vilnius Noble Institute (1856-1862), participating in 1863 uprising, exile to province of Kazanė, later- studies and work in Warsaw and Munich, return to the native estate in 1901. Only some creative works by R. Švoinickis came to our days, his creation is not researched more widely. The author of article surways the known creative works, shows their keeping places, discusses the “show-room” art’s phenomena in Švoinickis creation, in the illustrations of periodicals at first. Researching more widely the described in press lost creations on historical theme which reflected the artist’s connections with the 19th c. Vilnius Art School’s tradition and the neoromanticism art of the fall of the 19th c.The historical works were very highly presented by the art critics and artists themselves. The works were considered as the most complicated to show a talent and imagination of the artists. The nearest historical theme of nobiliarity of Lithuanian and Polish State of the 17th -18th c.c. which he aimed to show by symbolic and private life. The main persons in his creative works are simple noblemen who discussed the State’s fate in small noisy seyms. Thinking about the behaviour of nobility artist wanted to show the reasons of distinction of Republic of both nations (self-will of nobles, debauch, self-interest), but also idealized the nobiliarity patriotism, aim to defend their freedom. In symbolic pictures basing on three noblemen generations’ (grandfather, father and son) image artist aimed to show the idea of activity to native land and carrying on the historical tradition.
