Summary / Abstract:

ENThe fields of life and diverse activity of the author of Lithuanian anthem Vincas Kudirka (1858-1899) are marked by the aim for aesthetic values. Kudirka was harmonious personality: The contemporaries remember him to be a pretty person who is inclined to various fine arts. This paper for the first time took note of calligraphy of Kudirka which pulsates with spiritual rebellion and individuality of the author. Kudirka wrote not redrafting (all contemporaries noticed that); he wrote evenly, daintily Lithuanian when his own alphabet was taken away and occupied. Instead ofthat alphabet, in return to this, the "present" of Russicism was given - strange civil. Kudirka has studied in a Russian Paežeriai primary-school, later he compulsorily spoke and wrote in a "Muscovite" manner at the gymnasium of Marijampolė and even at the University of Warszaw, thus, he had to learn Lithuanian letters and Lithuanian grammar on his own, and wrote in Lithuanian surreptitiously, constantly taking a risk of walking into the trap of the czars gendarmes. Kudirka with all his heart detested the nightmare of the civilization - to him the "civil" was not beautiful, and being a doctor he added that she was even unhealthy to the eyes of a Lithuanian... And he presented as the antithesis a personal the example of personal writing - calligraphy. The word calligraphy [kalios - beauty +grapbo - write) emerged from Greek and means a beautiful writing.Calligraphy in this paper is understood in its primary meaning - as a penmanship, beautiful writing. There are many examples of the calligraphy of Kudirka. One of them is the collection of hand-written strains Free Hours of Kudirka that are kept in the department of manuscripts in the library of VU. With reference to this collection, on the eve of this conference, a facsimile edition of The Autographs for my Owns of Kudirka (2009) which was prepared by Regina Koženiauskienė and Gintautas Česnys. The manuscripts of Kudirka are not only the expression of his soul or the sign of elegant posture, but also the symbol of resistance of a subjugated Lithuanian people of the late 19th century. With his nice handwriting, correct Lithuanian language Kudirka faced down the "language fright", forcibly enforced Russian alphabet, and drew a fine path of nationality for the recovery of press. Kudirka was the leader of nation's revival and a discerning strategist of politics and culture, who was able to mass a conscious Lithuanian clerisy, to see far ahead. His artistic ctrcation, lcttcts, articles, critical reviews, fight with "language frights", distress for graphomany of "rhymers" and cack-handed translations, arc the aims of aesthete, dictated by a beautiful publishing, for the nation to step towards the higher Lithuanian culture.
