Summary / Abstract:

ENBeauty is one of the essential categories of the Western aesthetics. Sense is the capacity of aesthetical categories. Synaesthesia is the event of the sense but not the formation of aesthetic speculation. Beauty is the accelerant of the senses and their sum. The pleasure of beauty, as sensual experience, stands on the horizon of all set of senses, i. e. experience of beauty covers all senses and not only the sense which is dedicated to. The category of beauty in Western aesthetics was unfolding like a trail on the stairs of sense hierarchy, distinguishing higher (sight and hearing) and lower senses (touch, taste, smell). Even the phenomenon of synaesthesia, which professedly had to unite the dispersed set of senses, was establishing itself on the foundations of this hierarchy, when the canonical example of synaesthesia is declared a bipolar sense connection - chromatic hearing. Despite this, the act of beauty experience itself is not clear with regard to sense hierarchy. The category of beauty, which is established in the conditions of sight sense hegemony, happens not to be a blind foundation of one or two senses (including hearing), but it involves numerous sensory effects that keep its existence. Beauty both in the environment of transcendence and corporeality happens as a special act of sense cohesion, in which the participants are not discrete senses but their holistic system. The conception of beauty is not static - has not only temporal variations but also structural pulsation which shows the currents of flowing senses and instability.Although for many ages the category of beauty has been associated with the artifact of the stability symbols of the senses of sight and hearing, it is still avoided to compare it with temporary, endangered and unsteady senses as smell or touch, but at a non-manifested and especially non-articulated level, the category of beauty has always been accompanied by the synaesthetic shadow. The category of beauty itself for this reason remained quite ephemeral, difficult to define, as if having outside hanging roots, when indeed, these had to seep through the body and in the net of its senses. Beauty covers the set of the senses of the body, awakens it and becomes supported by it. Beauty category in the Western aesthetics secretly uses a wide number and base of interconnected senses. Beauty, no matter if it is perceived as a disinterested decision, pleasure or mathematical calculation, is the sprout of sense rizoma. The dynamism of beauty canon is first of all related not to historicity of animalism or rationality (e. g., in a mathematical aspect, the ideal of beauty - golden cut - is changed by the beauty of fractal), but to conservation of anti-temporal sense unity (an inexhaustible factory of intcr-sensory metaphors, with the aim to exceed the limits of conventional definition of beauty). Thus, in the core of beauty category there resides a synaesthetic nucleus. In this thought perspective, various classical and alternative examples of beauty category spread (A. Baumgarten, I. Kant, M. Beardsley, G. Santayana, F. Sibley, A. Danto etc.) and widely spread theories of synaesthesia (R. Cytowic, R. Morgan etc.) will be compared.
