ENVilnius has a special place in Milosz's works. In his postwar work, especially that written as an emigre, Vilnius becomes the most important city, the city which "he could have never left". However, between the wars, when he actually lived there, he was not so enthusiastic about Vilnius. He was annoyed by its provincialism and conservatism. As a student, a member of the "Žagary" group, and later as a Vilnius radio journalist, he many times shows his dislike of Vilnius' conservatism, of the idea of regionalism. In his article "The Meaning of Regionalism", he argues that regionalism weakens a city's cultural dynamics, is an attempt at pacifying nationalistic frictions, and deprives the city of a broader perspective, strengthening its provincial character. His correspondence with Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, trip to Paris and his contacts with Oskar Miłosz additionally increased his desire to leave Vilnius. This happened, with some help from the local, not so friendly, authorities in 1937. Until 1939, however, he maintained his ties with Vilnius, publishing in "Kurier Wileński", "Środy Literackie" and "Comoedia". It is only as an emigre poet that he creates a positive myth of Vilnius, in his well known poems "I Could Never Leave You", "City", "From the Rising of the Sun" and many poems from the last decade of his life, as well as in his "Rodzinna Europa", "Szukanie Ojczyzny", "Zaczynając od moich ulic" and others.
