ENThe history of one of the dominant and rapidly developed industrial breweries on Lithuanian territory from the mid-19th century has not been consistently explored before. Several topics have been published in this research field; however, their objectives and methodological diversity do not permit constructing a unified historical narrative. The purpose of the work is to conduct a historical analysis of one of the largest industrial breweries in the past in Lithuania, namely Prienai brewery. The objectives of the work are: to explore the considerations of brewery business and its impact on Prienai city and its residents; to analyze the situation of industrial brewery on Lithuanian territory within a period of one century; as well as to search for and explore the facts of the role of Prienai brewery in the development of industrial brewing. The study covers a period of industrial brewing in the former unit of Prienai brewery - Stakliškės Gintaras brewery company, which was active until 1965. Analytical, field studies and writing methods were used in this work, as well as archival sources, historiographic and iconographic materials were analyzed. The residents of Prienai city, who could present significant information and facts about the topic, were interviewed. The study revealed that the brewery business was first mentioned in 1893. At that time, the company was identified as L. Goldberg vodka and spirits factory. It is assumed that beer production in Prienai could have been launched between the 8th and 9th decades of the 19th century. The company was active and operated till 1915. The company was purchased by B. Šakovas in 1920. Before the Soviet occupation and nationalization, Prienai brewery became a modern industrial brewing company that produced a wide range of products. In the period of 1931-1941, the company produced mead on the industrial level; the study of this topic is published by the historian A. Ragauskas. During the German occupation, Prienai brewery Sudavija (the new name of the brewery) was active and produced a number of different products. The company was bombed in an air raid in August 1944. Prienai brewery was the largest and most significant company in the city, whose wide range of top quality products brought fame to the city in the country and the world. The historical image and memories of Prienai residents about the past brewery have remained positive till nowadays, but they are absolutely not reflected in the modern image of Prienai city.
