ENThe first people settled in Šarnelė after the ice-age. The kuršiai tribe lived in this territory since 500 A.C. At XVI–XVII c. the noblemen Šandžiai, Šarneliai, Rimgailos had their domains in Šarnelė. Over time the patrimony of Mantvidai family got into the hands of strange managers and became an object of long term judicial conflicts. At the middle of XIX c. the center of the domain became the property of Barakauskai family. Pranciškus Barakauskis fully strengthened the economy, and shaped the image of the Manor. He started from the foundations: constructed farm buildings, built two residential houses (1888 and 1913) in a spacious 2 ha estate homestead, formed the functional areas. In war and postwar period his daughter Adele was maintaining farmstead, and then her brother Vitoldas. At the end of the war monks of Žemaičių Kalvarija settled temporarily in the Manor, the Mass were being offered here. Under government authorization four families were accommodated in the Manor; the house and all the Manor farmstead was hardly devastated. But after the unauthorized persons moved out, the residential house was arranged, the rooms were furnished with the ancient furniture of a priest Anicet – the son of Barakauskai family. Since 1950–1960, when the movement of ethnographical material collecting – a kind of cultural resistance strain – commenced, the interest of intelligentsia in the past of the native land intensified and the visits to Mantvidiškiai Manor became frequent. A big number of people famous in culture, art, science field visited the Manor. [From the publication]
