Summary / Abstract:

ENThe exhibition “Portraits of the Rulers and Magnates of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from Museums in Ukraine” was held from July 4 to October 28, 2012. It was organized by the National Museum Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and Lithuanian Art Museum, in cooperation with three Western Ukrainian museums – Lviv National Art Gallery, Lviv History Museum and Volyn Regional Museum in Lutsk. It was the first time when Lithuanian museum visitors could see the valuable Lituanistic collection from the museums of Lviv and Lutsk. There were 86 portraits on display, which used to decorate manors and churches of Lviv, Pidhirtsi, Olesko, Chortkiv, Vyshnivets, Zhovkva, Olyka, etc. These are the images of Lithuanian and Polish rulers, their family members and the nobility of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania: Radziwiłł, Chodkiewicz, Saphieha, Sanguszko, Wiśniowiecki, Pac, Tiskiewicz, Pociej, Gosiewski families and other important figures in Lithuanian history, created by 16th–19th century local and foreign artists. Aside from important historical dimension, these portraits carry immeasurable artistic and iconographic value. The article presents the most interesting exhibits. These are the portraits created by the artists, who worked for the rulers of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth: Daniel Schulz (1615–1683), Louis de Silvestre (1675–1760), Marcello Bacciarelli (1731–1818), the Austrian painter Joseph Pitschmann (1758–1834), who resided in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the student of Franciszek Smuglewicz Józef Peszka (1767–1831), 16th–17th century painters of Lviv city Wojciech Stefanowicz († 1588), Szymon Boguszowicz (ca. 1575–1648), the painter of the Radziwiłł manor Józef Ksawery Heski († ca. 1810), also Konstanty Aleksandrowicz (mentioned 1777–1794), who worked at the manors of Morawski, Radziwiłł and other noble families, Franciszek Pawlikowicz (18th c.), the painter of Potocki and Sodowsky family manor in Chortkiv, Bazyli Klikowski (18th c.), who worked at the manor of Tajkury and many other more or less skilled unknown local artists.
