ENEthnologist, linguist and educator Petras Būtėnas was one of the outstanding personalities of interwar town of Panevėžys. He was known as a researcher of Lithuanian dialects, prepositions and ancient place names, contributor to the Lithuanian language dictionary (wrote more than 8 000 words). He also prepared the first Lithuanian ethnology and antiquities collection program, developed the term ethnology and wrote an accentuation textbook. All his life, as well as of other pre-war intelligentsia in Panevėžys, was dedicated to educational, scientific and cultural work and strengthening of the young independent state. Būtėnas lived in emigration from 1944 until his death in 1980.
