Summary / Abstract:

ENThe verbs discussed belong to the CeRC/CiRC apophonic type: the roots end with two consonants: the sonant r, l, m or n and a plosive or fricative (thus constituting an indivisible diphthong), and have declensional gradation of root vowels among the basic forms of the verb. There are 16 such verbs in the standard Lithuanian language and dialects: 5 with the diphthongs er/ir (kirpti “to cut”, kirsti “to fell, to reap, to strike”, pirkti “to buy”, piršti “to propose (marriage), to offer”, sirgti “to be(come) ill”), 3 with el/il (milžti “to milk”, tilpti “to fit, to fill (up a volume, intrans.)”, vilkti “to carry, to drag”), 3 with em/im (kišti „to cram, to stuff, to overeat“, krimsti “to eat (in small bites), to nag (someone)”, slimpti “to creep, to crawl, to slide” and 5 with en/in (drįsti “to dare, to venture, to risk”, lįsti “to crawl, to intrude”, rinkti “to gather, to collect, to choose, to select, to elect, to vote for”, slinkti “to creep, to crawl, to slide”, trinkti “to wash one’s hair”). This is perhaps the most abundant type of Lithuanian verb with declensional ablaut. The origin and development of the apophony of the verbs has not been investigated in greater detail until now. This article is made up of two sections. Lithuanian examples are compared with cognates in related languages first, and then Slavic, Germanic and cognates from other languages are considered. In the second section, the formation of roots, origin and evolution of Baltic apophony are discussed based on the data and analysis from the first section. As the analysis of the verb origin shows they are not of uniform age and their roots developed at different times. One set of roots are ancient and reach back to common Indo-European times. Verbs such as kerta, melž(i)a, perša and others developed from them. [From the publication]
