Summary / Abstract:

ENResearch of urban feasts, their customs and rituals has become especially significant in a modern global society for solution of the problems of ethnology, anthropology, and sociology. This paper analyses the issue of preservation, creation, and transformation of traditions in the modern city. The aim of the paper is to discuss and to review the urban festival traditions in Lithuania and England. The object of research is the festivals of two cities: Vilnius and Oxford; they belong to different types of urban festivals: commercial festival in Vilnius "Our Marriage", May Day festival in Oxford, associated with calendar customs. The paper is based on the field research, carried out in Vilnius (2010-2013) and in Oxford (2012-2013). Different groups of sources have been taken into account while carrying out the analysis, namely: interviews, periodicals, internet sites, visual (photographs, video clips), and archival materials (photograph collections of Pitt Rivers museum). The following conclusion has been worked out: modern commercial urban festivals have mostly digressed from traditional customs and they are the most easily influenced by globalization and especially receptive to novelties, coming from the West. On one hand, calendar festivals are receptive to novelties, and globalization phenomena; on the other hand, they are constantly trying to preserve the old traditions and to create new ones.
