The Kaleidoscope of Possibilities Facing Lithuanian Statehood in 1944

LTStraipsnyje svarstoma padėtis, susiklosčiusi Lietuvoje 1944 metais, tai yra alternatyvos sovietinės Lietuvos su Vilniumi bei Klaipėda variantui. Apsvarstytos tokios galimybės: Lietuvos be Vilniaus, Lietuvos su vadinamąja liaudies demokratijos politine sistema, Lietuvos su teritoriniu išsiplėtimu Karaliaučiaus srityje ir Lietuvos kaip buferio prieš eventualiai savarankišką Lenkiją. Galimybės apsvarstytos analizuojant Kremliaus politiką lenkiškojo faktoriaus atžvilgiu bei SSRS santykius su Vakarų sąjungininkais 1944 m. Taip pat remtasi to meto lietuvių komunistų refleksija. 1944 m. situacijos alternatyvų modeliavimui analogijų ieškota Raudonosios armijos žygyje į Vakarus 1918–1920 m. Nepaisant apsvarstytų variantų hipotetiškumo bei neapibrėžtumo, daroma išvada, kad Kremlius 1944 m. Lietuvos atžvilgiu veikė atsižvelgdamas ne tik į Raudonosios armijos potencialą, bet ir į lenkiškojo veiksnio raidą bei į Vakarų sąjungininkų poziciją. Daroma išvada, kad Lietuvos suverenumo bei teritorinio apibrėžtumo situacija neišvengiamai būtų kitusi didėjant Lenkijos suverenumo laipsniui ir netgi griežtėjant T. Ruzvelto bei V. ENThe paper analyses the situation that Lithuania saw in 1944, i.e. alternatives to the option of Soviet Lithuania with Vilnius and Klaipėda. The author discusses the following options: Lithuania without Vilnius, Lithuania with the so-called people’s democratic political system, Lithuania with its territorial expansion in the Kaliningrad region and Lithuania as a buffer before eventually independent Poland. The options are explored by analysing the Kremlin's policy with respect to the Polish factor, and the relations of the USSR with the Western allies in 1944. The paper is also based on reflections of Lithuanian communists of that period. The author also looked for analogues of modelling the alternatives to the 1944 situation in the Red Army march to the West in 1918–1920. Despite the hypothetic and indefinite nature of the analysed options, a conclusion is drawn that the Kremlin's actions with respect to Lithuania in 1944 took into account not only the Red Army potential, but also the evolution of the Polish factor and the position of the Western allies. The paper states in conclusion that the situation of Lithuania’s sovereignty and territorial delineation would have undergone undoubted change with the increase of the level of Poland’s sovereignty and even with the tougher stance of T. Roosevelt and W. Churchill with respect to Stalin.
