Summary / Abstract:

ENThe first printed Lithuanian grammar mentions the Slovak-born Czech grammatician Laurentius Benediktus Nudozierinus and his famous work of 1603. The reference given in the preface of Daniel Klein's grammar was intended to prove the readers the need for Lithuanian grammar, and now it reveals to us the sources of a linguistic thought that he based his grammar on. The article analyses the relationship between Klein's and Nudozierinus' grammar books. The focus is on the prefaces of both works. Both authors fought against the same prejudices of their days. Two most important stereotypes were: first, it is absolutely impossible to write a grammar book of a folk language, and second, even if they managed to write such a grammar, it would be completely unnecessary, as folk language can be learned simply by using it or listening to those who do. Differences in the text were probably due to the uneven education and personalities of the authors; an important role was played by the different cultural environment that they worked in. The study of the linguistic sources used in Klein's grammar suggests that while analysing the question of the Czech and Lithuanian philological connections, researchers should not be limit themselves and analyse only the influence that the Prague linguistic group of the 20th century had on Lithuanian linguistics. There were some much older interfaces, too. The same methodological principles, explicitly stated in prefaces of their textbooks, could be considered to be the result of the interaction of grammars in question. On the level of text linguistics, the connection between the Czech and Lithuanian grammars is evidenced by Cicerone's idea used is similar way. In addition to the article, Nudozierinus' facsimiles of Czech language grammar are also published along with their rewritten version and translation into the Lithuanian language.
