Summary / Abstract:

Remiantis sfragistine medžiaga straipsnyje mėginama rekonstruoti Lietuvos valdovų politinę bei ikonografinę programą ir išryškinti XIII a. pabaigos ir XV a. pradžios Lietuvos valdovų majestotiniuose antspauduose vaizduojamų insignijų ypatumus. Reikšminiai žodžiai: Lietuvos valdovai; Insignijos; Antspaudai; 13 amžius; 14 amžius; 15 amžius; Lithuania's rulers; Insignia; Majesty seals; The 13th-15th centuries.

ENThe development of the status of the ruler of Lithuania and the political context directly influenced the formation of the image of the seal of the ruler of Lithuania and the institution of the seal itself. The symbolism of the power and ideology of the ruler of the state was expressed by the insignia of the monarchs, which played the essential symbolic and sacral role in the ceremonies of crowning and enthronement of monarchs. Referring to the sphragistic materials, the article makes attempts at reconstructing the political and iconographical programme of the rulers of Lithuania and highlighting the peculiarities of the insignia, presented in the seals of the rulers of Lithuania of the end of the 13th – beginning of the 15th century. Upon overviewing the iconographical programme of the seals of the rulers of Lithuania one can state that is was influenced by both the medieval rules of sphragistics and the specific political strivings. The seals became not only the representation of the person, covering the official symbolism, but also the expression of the aspirations of the institution of power. The status of the ruler of Lithuania and the political reality of the end of the 13th – beginning of the 15th century had direct influence on the image of the seal and quite frequently the iconographical programme of the seal directly expressed the status of the holder of the seal. The seal represented the insignia of power of the rulers of Lithuania. The sword, which is undoubtedly the oldest insignia, came from the seals, containing the images of a pedestrian and equestrian warriors and divided the ruling person and the persons, belonging to the dynasty of the ruling person. The seal of Vytautas, which reflected all the insignia of the ruler, became the insignia of the state, in which a sovereign state was constituted in a way, recognizable throughout Europe.
