Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article focuses on one of the most significant works of graphic artist Aspazija Surgailienė (1928–2011) – the illustrated children’s book Pasakų skrynelė (The Chest of Fairy Tales). This book showcases Soviet modernism during the “thaw” period in Lithuania, reflecting the trends in children’s book illustration and the search for creative innovation. The article explores the concept of the book’s design and its artistic evolution, situating it within the artist’s broader legacy and the context of graphic art during that era. It also examines the reception of the book by official art authorities and young readers. In 1961, the State Publishing House in Vilnius commissioned Surgailienė to illustrate a collection of fairy tales. Aldona Liobytė, an editor at the publishing house, presented an unusual reference – a set of books in a box, Tables de La Fontaine, published in 1956 in the Mini Bibliothèque series in Paris. Inspired by this concept, Surgailienė created a Lithuanian version: a paper chest in the shape of a traditional ethnographic chest, containing small books inside. The illustrations for Pasakų skrynelė were created using the coloured linocut technique, with images inspired by traditional folklore tales and a style of decorative primitivism drawn from folk art. The publication earned recognition in the best illustrated book contests in the USSR in 1961 and in Lithuania in 1962. It was also featured at prominent international exhibitions, including the Leipzig International Book Fair in 1962 and 1965, the Exhibition of the Most Beautiful Children’s Book Illustrations in Munich in 1966, and the International Biennale of Children’s Book Illustrations in Bratislava in 1967.The book’s immense popularity led the publishing house to commission four additional versions in 1961, 1963, 1965, and 1970, each with different texts. The article emphasizes that Pasakų skrynelė, due to its unique format and distinct artistic approach, became an iconic work for the generation of Lithuanian children in the 1960s. It played a significant role in shaping their understanding of national heritage and fostering their ethnic identity, offering an alternative to Soviet ideology. Keywords: Aspazija Surgailienė, Aldona Liobytė, illustration, childrens book, mini book, book-box, folk art, folklore, modernism, book art competition, Soviet Lithuania.
