Community - city - history Hillel Noah Maggid and the emergence of the Jewish "Vilner" historiography
LTStraipsnyje svarstoma Vilniaus žydų bendruomenės istoriografijos problematika. Pagrindinis tyrimo tikslas – atskleisti žydų bendruomenės istoriografijos raidą, įvertinti Vilniuje gimusio ir dirbusio genealogijos bei istorijos specialisto Hillel Noah Maggido indėlį į žydiškos istoriografijos klostymąsi Lietuvoje bei apibrėžti aplinkybes, lėmusias Vilniaus žydų bendruomenės istoriografinių tyrimų iškilimą. Vilniaus žydų bendruomenės istoriografijos era prasidėjo 1860 metais, kai buvo publikuotas kolektyvinis biobibliografinis leidinys „A faithful city“. Leidinio iniciatyva priklausė Hillel Noah Maggidui, kuriam rūpėjo surinkti, peržiūrėti, išsaugoti bei dokumentuoti visą Vilniaus žydų bendruomenės asmeninės ir kolektyvinės kilmės informaciją. Per 50 metų istorikui pavyko suformuoti precedento neturinčią, labai išsamią Vilniaus žydų duomenų bazę, kurioje sugulė beveik 5000 Vilniaus žydų bendruomenės narių istorijos. Buvo panaudoti beveik visi įmanomi informacijos šaltiniai: fiksuotos šeimos tradicijos, prisiminimai, antkapių įrašai ir kt. Šis leidinys tapo Vilniaus žydų istorijos tyrimų pagrindu ir rimta paskata visos Lietuvos žydų studijoms. Straipsnyje plačiai nušviečiamos Hillel Noah Maggido tyrimų pastangos, jo asmeninės refleksijos, sprendžiant Vilniaus žydų bendruomenės tapatybės raiškos ir identiteto klausimus, vertinama žydų istoriografijos praeitis, įvardinami XX a. istorinių įvykių, holokausto nulemti žydų istorijos tyrimų pokyčiai ir šiandien susiklosčiusi žydų istoriografijos situacija.
ENThe article deals with the problems of historiography of the Vilnius Jewish community. The main objective of the research is to reveal the evolution of the historiography of the Jewish community, to assess the contribution of Hillel Noah Maggid, a genealogist and historian who was born and worked in Vilnius, to the development of Jewish historiography in Lithuania and to define the circumstances that led to the rise of historiographic studies of the Vilnius Jewish community. The era of the historiography of the Jewish community in Vilnius began in the year 1860 when the collective biobiblographic publication "A Faithful City" was published. The initiative regarding said publication lies with Hillel Noah Maggid, who was interested in collecting, reviewing, preserving and documenting all personal and collective information of the Vilnius Jewish community. Throughout a period of 50 years, the historian succeeded in creating an unprecedented, very detailed database of Jewish people who lived in Vilnius, where almost 5000 biographies and stories of the members of the Jewish community were stored. Almost all possible sources of information were used: family traditions, memories, headstone inscriptions, etc. This publication became the basis for research on the history of the Jewish people who lived in Vilnius and a serious impetus for all Lithuanian Jewish studies. The article reveals the efforts that Hillel Noah Maggid put into the research as well as his personal reflections on issues of the expression of the identity of the Jewish community in Vilnius. It also evaluates the past of Jewish historiography, names changes in the studies on Jewish history, caused by historical events and Holocaust, and the current situation of Jewish historiography.
