"Future in the past" : modernization of historical figures in early Maskilic periodicals

LTStraipsnyje "Ateitys praeityje": istorinių asmenų modernizavimas ankstyvoje maskiliškoje periodikoje" bandoma, pasitelkiant ankstyvąją žydų švietėjų (maskilių) publicistiką ir žurnalistiką, apžvelgti jų edukacinę bei ideologinę programą, pradėtą realizuoti XVIII a. pabaigoje ir XIX a. pradžioje Vokietijoje ir Austrijoje-Vengrijoje ir tęsiama Rusijos imperijos, tame tarpe Lietuvos, žydų švietėjų. Šios programos tikslas buvo formuoti naują žydų identitetą per jo tradicinių komponentų perstruktūravimą, kai kurių jų atsisakymą ir naujų, žydus turinčių artinti prie jų supančių Europos šalių visuomenių, prijungimą. Straipsnis koncentruojasi ties biografijų žanro, pristatyto pirmuose hebrajiškuose periodiniuose leidiniuose, analizę, kadangi kruopščiai atrinktų žydų tautos "herojų" sumaniai pateiktos biografijos tapo svarbia priemone minėtai programai įvykdyti. Autorė analizuoja Vokietijos švietėjų žurnalą Hameassef (Rinkėjas) ir Austrijos-Vengrijos - Bikkurey ha-Ittim (Pirmas derlius). ENThe article “Ateitys Praeityje: Istorinių Asmenų Modernizavimas Ankstyvoje Maskiliškoje Periodikoje” (Futures in the Past: Modernization of Historic Figures in the Early Russian Periodical Publications) makes an attempt, based on the early publicistics and journalism of Jewish educators, to overview their educational and ideological programme, whose implementation was commenced at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century in Germany and Austria-Hungary and continued by Jewish educators of the Russian Empire, including Lithuania. The programme was aimed at formation of the new Jewish identity through the restructuring of its traditional components, refusal of certain of such components and implementation of new ones, which would anticipate Jews towards the societies of the surrounding European countries. The article focuses on the analysis of the genre of biographies, presented in the first Hebrew periodicals, since the cleverly provided biographies of the carefully selected “heroes” of the Jewish nation became an important tool for implementation of the said programme. The author provides an analysis of German magazine “Hameassef” (“Elector”) and Austria-Hungarian “Bikkurey ha-Ittim” ( “First Harvest”).
