ENThe article is devoted to the analysis of the constructive training of children (3-6 years old) in the material environment of the kindergarten arranged pursuant to the International programme of training pre-school children "Step by Step" of the Open Society Institute (USA, New York). The philosophic basis for the above programme is free training of children in the material environment divided into zones of activities: the language, mathematics, construction, art. By watching the children's activities in the natural environment and fixing the interaction of the children with things we find out the functions performed by the things in the constructive training of children. It was determined that the success of the constructive training is influenced by the division of the environment into the zones of activities. Particularly good are the children's achievements in the academic activities (reading, counting). The 3-6 year old children use in their activities such things which are multifunctional in the processes of constructive training. The things used most frequently in the centres of children's activities are books, white paper, coloured pens.
