Summary / Abstract:

ENThe main conditions, influencing successful farming, are being analysed in the article. These conditions include: geographical conditions, soil quality, unpredictable natural phenomena, labour traditions, worsening social environment, complicated economic situation, limited knowledge and skills in farming, etc. The majority of farms are small scale and ineffective as farmers are used to dual labour system formed in the Soviet times that has distorted their thinking and in this way aggravates their potential in farming. Different economic farming conditions arise due to differences in soil quality, farm size, size of the cultivated plot of land, owned technology, etc. Usage of efficient and quality mechanisms is limited by farmers’ economic potential. Recently purchasing prices of agricultural products have stabilized below production costs. For these reasons farming has become very problematic and farmers are facing bankruptcy despite their investments, skills and experience gained in farming. Their expectations are connected with the assistance from the European Union, where farmers get more substantial support and incomes than in Lithuania. Promises to farmers have been made to compensate up to 45% investments in case their business plan projects correspond to many strict requirements. Agricultural activities are of high importance for the country's economy as they provide incomes for thousands of farmers, create job places in food processing companies and form a big part of the country's export. The state should focus on the worsening situation at the primary level. Centres set up in rural areas might provide farmers with the necessary information and various kinds of services.
