Summary / Abstract:

ENThe interpretation of Edmund Husserl's Origin of Geometry presented in the article aims at answering several questions. Can works of art be analysed as ideal objectivities? What is the role of ideal objectivities in history? What are the premises for the scientific enquiry into spiritual traditions which appeals to our knowledge of factual history? E. Husscrl looks into the origin of geometry, yet his is not a quest for the first geometer in history. This phenomenological study reflects the existence and tradition of cul tural objects as opposed to the history of geometry in its traditional sense. The existence and transmission of ideal objects (including works of art) is related to the acts of primary idealisation and its re-activation. Careful consideration of ideal objects explains their role in the establishment of the historical community and proves their constitution, transmission and recognition to be an immanent historical condition. Contending with histo ricism and relativism, E. Husscrl points out the framework of meaning inhe rent in cultural facts. An analysis of the origin of ideal geometric objects reavcals the intcrsubjective dimension of the historical and linguistic commu nity. Hans Georg Gadamer draws attention to the absolute identity of the artwork, which does not originate in the circumstances of factual history, but instead takes active part in creating historical time. Keywords: phenomenology, philosophy of history, cultural tradition, ideal objects, historical a priori, defeat of historicism.
