ENWar prose belongs to the literature of memory. A continuous pursuit exists to find the kind of memory models, which would reflect the new periods of society in literature. The Lithuanian war novel appeared relatively late and represents a new kind of war prose, the authors of which put the internal world of the person at the top of the list, and take a fresh look at ties with history and once again contemplate on their negative experience. The characters of K. Marukas’ novels are depicted as fully formed psychological beings, who are revealed with the help of attention to the surroundings and the evaluation of it. A picture of the reality of war is re-created by fixing a particular calendar date and historical events of war. Particular attention is focused on the subjective understanding of time, and the revealing of the interaction of the past, present and future. An important trait of K. Marukas’ work, which is also common for war prose, is the naturalist principle of portrayal. The special features of Naturalism, as a principle of portraying war, are brought out by comparing the world of K. Marukas and E.M. Remarque. In E.M. Remarque’s novels, there is more naturalism of a physiological and biological nature, while K. Marukas is more apt to use everyday naturalism. K. Marukas’ trilogy “Kam patekės saulė“, “O mūsų tiek mažai” and “Kareiviškas romanas” is an important event in Lithuanian war novels, which today can be understood in a broader context of literature of memory and war prose.
