Summary / Abstract:

ENArticle discusses the anthroponyms which originated in the Slavic scriptorium of the ancient Lithuanian state and is generally attributed to the (non-Lithuanian) heritage of the Lithuanian state such as: patronymics with the suffixes -ovič, -evič used to identify the people of any nationality and all walks of life in the ancient Lithuanian state (in the Duchy of Muscovy these suffixes were used to identify only the nobility, and the Poles did not have these suffixes in ancient times); a more recent substitute of these -ovič, -evič suffixes were the -ski type suffixes (-ovski, -evski…) which used to be attached not only to toponyms but also to the names of persons, for example, Adamovski instead of Adamovič; Lithuanian person names which coincided with foreign names due to Polonisation. The article discusses the need to investigate the origin of personal names which emerged in the areas previously mostly inhabited by the Balts and subsequently incorporated into Poland, and to highlight the contribution of the Baltic proper names to the present Polish anthroponymy.
