ENThe borough of Akmenė was founded in 1537 by Jonas Stankevičius-Bilevičius, possessor of the tijūnija (district) of Didieji Dirvėnai (The Great Dirvėnai) in Žemaitija. In the 1561 inventory the borough’s name was Dabikinė. (Now the estate near Akmenė bears this name.) It was a typical small town with a market square, church, district administrator’s residence, executioner, 82 parcels, 28 alehouses. In 1655-1656 in the act of the Sweden hostility the borough was totally desolated. Until the end of the 18th century Akmenė had been rapidly restored, and in 1792 the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, Stanislovas Augustas, granted Akmenė the city rights, but the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was annexed to Rusia, and town-dwellers surrendered hope to be independent citizens.
