LT(Lietuvos istorijos instituto direktoriaus pranešimas skaitytas Septyniolikto Visuotinio Lenkijos istorikų suvažiavimo /Krokuva, 2004 09 18/ simpoziume „Apie mus be mūsų – Lenkijos istorija kitų šalių istorikų akimis“). Lietuvos ir Lenkijos istorija ilgą laiką tarnavo lietuvių tautinės savimonės formavimui ir įtvirtinimui. Lietuvos istorikai labai aktyviai dalyvavę, ypač XX-o amžiaus pirmojoje pusėje, eliminuojant lenkus iš Lietuvos istorijos, pastaraisiais dešimtmečiais vis intensyviau ieško Lietuvos ir Lenkijos istorijos jungčių. Vis tik, politikos lygmenyje Respublikos istorija ir toliau lieka ne sava. Apie tai liudija ir tas faktas, jog 1791 m. gegužės 3 d. Konstitucijos paskelbimo data iki šiol Lietuvoje neįteisinta kaip valstybinė šventė.

ENFor many years, separation of the common history of Poland and Lithuania had served the purpose of establishing and strengthening of the national identity of the Lithuanians. The Lithuanian historians, especially in the first half of the 20th century, actively participated in the process of eliminating Poles from the history of Lithuania whereas in the last decade they have been more and more active in search of the elements combining the history of Lithuania with that of Poland. However, on the political ground, the history of the Republic of Poland still is not recognised as a part of the history of Lithuania, which can be proved by the fact that the day of passing the Constitution of the 3rd May (1791) still has not found its place among national holidays of Lithuania.
