Summary / Abstract:

ENThe continued survey of Lithuanian art and artistic life in exile discusses social organizational and pedagogical activities of exiled artists, also exhibitions of Lithuanian art in Germany and other countries. The survey is mostly based on the materials of exile periodicals of the time, as well as on later studies of authors in emigration and the country. In post-war Germany, the Lithuanian Institute of Arts, and Artists and Architects Society were functioning which aimed to unite the “creative workers” dispersed throughout the world, and to ensure the continuity of Lithuanian artistic creation on the international scene. The Freiburg School of Arts and Crafts established by V.K Jonynas, was a unique centre of artistic activities in post-war Germany, which offered, at different times, courses to 130 students, and over four years of its functioning trained two classes of graduates. In later years former professors and students of the School formed the nucleus of Lithuanian art in exile. Over a short period of time dozens of exhibitions of art in exile, different in trends and artistic level were arranged in Germany, with the most important ones held in Freiburg. Lithuanian artists were active participants of group exhibitions in Paris. . The years 1945-1949 became the years of intensive creation, social organizational and pedagogical activities in the development of Lithuanian art in exile.
