ENThe academicians of the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Science (LCAS) have always sought to make Lithuania an educated and advanced state. They sacrificed their lives and dedicated all their efforts to Lithuania. Surrounded by big states, Lithuania was able and is still able to survive as an independent country only on condition it achieved a high scientific and cultural standards. The academicians of the LCAS do not separate the progress of science and culture from Christian moral principles, the most emphatic of which are love and self-sacrifice to others. Only an abstinent country is in power to achieve the heights of science and culture. The academicians of the LCAS Professor Bishop M. Reinys, Professors Pranas Dovydaitis, Juozas Eretas and Zenonas Ivinskis laid a special emphasis on the ideas concerning temperance, supporting them by their own personal life, academic, social and political activities. In this way they pursued the work started by Bishop Motiejus Valančius.Owing to their efforts Lithuania was drawn into the activities of temperance societies of European countries. The tasks pursued by scholars in the Catholic Youth organizations, such as, the Ateitininkai (representing urban youth) and the pavasarininkai (representing rural youth) and in other Catholic organizations which were united under the Catholic Action Centre laid a strong foundation upon which the present day Lithuania rests. They were building Lithuania by their sober mind, noble spirit and strong will, and were never tired of spreading the ideas of temperance. The academicians of the LCAS Archbishop M. Reinys, Professors P. Dovydaitis, J. Eretas and Z. Ivinskis are excellent examples to be followed by the constructors of nowadays Lithuania. [From the publication]
